Saving Life Among AIDS Orphans in Uganda

Dear friends and family,

We hadn't planned to send you another newsletter this soon, but so much is happening with the ministry, we just had to tell SOMEBODY. As you read through the various stories that follow, please keep in mind the ministry is less than ten months old. Doors have opened so quickly and news of the ministry has spread so wide, we can only assume God holds the AIDS orphans of Uganda in a special place in his heart and he wants them to know they are loved. If you are receiving this newsletter for the first time, please visit www.amagara.org to learn more about the amazing work being done by a small, dedicated group of volunteers in the U.S. and in Uganda.

Juna Amagara is shaping up to be a great ministry, open to children of all faiths, one everyone can support with pride and confidence. Please call me to see how your family, church or business can support our work in Africa.

May God continue to bless you abundantly.

-- Ben Tumuheirwe

JA Now Registered in US and Uganda

Juna Amagara is now officially registered in the U.S. and in Uganda. In the U.S., our State of Illinois registration has been granted and the ministry has applied for 501(c)3 status from the IRS. WIth that application in process, all donations made to Juna Amagara are eligible for the maximum tax deduction as allowed by law.

In Uganda, being officially registered as a non-government charitable organization (NGO) allows the ministry to open a bank account in its own name and begin operating under certain subsidized guidelines. It also means the ministry is under intense government scrutiny to ensure that it is operating both as an effective children's ministry and as an effective steward of the monies it receives. These are two giant steps forward in the life of this ministry. Also, it is important to note Juna Amagara now has its own address.

Matt and Crystal Join Juna Amagara

Two amazing things happened immediately after the June mission trip to Uganda. First, Matt Kehn, a recent graduate of Trinity University who was looking for a lifetime missions opportunity in Africa, agreed to become Director of Evangelism for Juna Amagara in Uganda. Matt has spent considerable time in the Great Lakes Region of Africa, having attended school in Kenya and participated in the MissioCamp conference in Uganda. He has preached to youth groups throughout Uganda and Tanzania. "Juna Amagara and I are a good fit," he said. "We will be able to grow together."

Not only did Matt find his life's work in Uganda, he found his future life partner as well. Crystal Marsh, a 2004 graduate of Moody Bible Institute, was part of the June missions team working throughout the southwestern part of the country. Matt and Crystal had known each other as friends before the trip, but they fell in love in Africa and are now engaged to be married by Ben Tumuheirwe in Texas this coming February. Crystal will dedicate her time to working at the Amagara House Children's Home in Mbarara, assisting in the establishment of future children's homes and assisting Matt in his evangelism work. The couple have purchased land Mbarara City and plan to build a home there. See more of Matt and Crystal and the excitement they bring to their work at http://kehnsjam.blogspot.com

Mykha's Restaurant to Hold Fundraiser

Mark your calendar for March 6, 2005. That's the day Mykha's Restaurant in Glen Ellyn will be hosting a fundraiser for Juna Amagara. Restaurant owner Mykha has a soft spot in her heart for orphans as she is the sole sponsor for an orphanage in Viet Nam. This is a woman who barely escaped the country with her children during the fall of Hanoi. They emigrated to the U.S. where she held several jobs and ultimately opened the restaurant. Mykha's cuisine is an incredible combination of French and Asian flavors, but the restaurant holds only 50 people, so if you want to come, please get your reservation in early. March is not that far away. Let Ben know via email if you want to come.

Free Video Available

If you would like to see Juna Amagara at work in Uganda, a 15-minute video tape of the June, 2004 mission trip is now available. You'll meet some of the children of Amagara House, you'll hear Obadiah Monday, one of our sponsored students, you'll meet members of the board and other dedicated people and you'll see what the Americans do as part of a missions team. Outreach Foundation Supports Juna Amagara

In September, 2004 The Outreach Foundation of Franklin, TN, one of only three validated missions sending organizations for the Presbyterian Church (USA), agreed to add Juna Amagara to the list of missionaries and missions it supports for 2005. This means that if any of the 11,000 Presbyterian congregations in the U.S. are seeking opportunities for supporting mission in Africa, Juna Amagara will be among those available through The Outreach Foundation. In the Presbyterian world, this is like receiving the Seal of Good Housekeeping as an approved, valid and strategically important place to invest missions dollars. "We have had very little opportunity in Uganda to date," said Rob Weingartner, Executive Director of the Outreach Foundation. "Not through lack of desire, but through lack of finding an effective and motivated organization in country. Juna Amagara allows us to present Presbyterians with an opportunity to support important work in Africa with funds, direct involvement in the U.S. and also with frequent missions trips. We are pleased to be partnering with Juna Amagara."
